Highs and Lows! Lows and Highs!

Today I join my fellow bloggers in "serving up a slice" to the Tuesday Slice of Life sponsored by Stacey and Ruth from Two Writing Teachers.

I'm always interested in the forecasted high and low temperature for each day, but this post focuses on my roller coaster week, with some quick snapshot views:

High - Anticipating daughter's weekend visit!
Low - Saying goodbye on Monday morning and a 4:30 a.m. drive to the airport.
High - Sharing daughter's excitement about her move to Ithaca, the chance to reestablish their home again, and the opportunity to live full-time with her husband, after more than a year of rotations and living out of suitcases!
Low - Knowing that it's a long, long way from WA to NY.
High - Planning for my first visit in Oct!
Low - Knowing it will be a quick visit (teachers don't get much time off).
High - Emailing my favorite sub and her return email that she's available!
Low - Knowing that preparing for a trip always includes writing sub plans.

I'm getting depressed, time to flip my thinking!

Low - Discovering that daughter didn't want to eat out.  Her past week of board review had been filled with heavy meals and not enough activity.
High - Trying out two new recipes and enjoying some wonderful walks!
Low - Losing three books - Book Love which I was rereading to prepare for my school year, Don't Feed the Boy which I was close to finishing, and a resource activity book that I needed to prepare for my Sunday School lesson.
High - Locating all three books at different times resulting in three different times of celebration!
Low - Fearing that I'm losing my mind in addition to all these books.
High - Knowing that bad things come in threes, right?  So I shouldn't be losing anything else for awhile!
Low - Dragging my feet a bit as I head back to my classroom.
High - Having a former student to help me whose creativity also transformed my home for a book club on The Night Circus!
Low - Heading back to the classroom without my two dear friends who retired, neighbors on the right and on the left.
High - Greeting old colleagues all week and making new friends!
Low - Wanting to revise my independent reading program, but feeling overwhelmed.
High - Collaborating with my new neighbor & mentee who is a joy to work with!
Low - Realizing it's Tuesday, I need to write my SOL, I slept in, and I need to be at school.
High - Following Linda's Baie's advice:  "Write fast!"

  1. This was a roller coaster ride! I can relate to the low of your kids living so far away from you. Definitely a low! I think you are in for an interesting year.

  3. I am glad to see your post ended on a high note. So many ups and downs.
I pray your school year has more highs than lows, and that your visit with your daughter goes very slowly. May time not fly during your trip.
Thank you for sharing your life.

  5. I am putting this idea in my writer's notebook....seems like this might be a good one come March when I do my first SOL challenge!

  6. Oh Ramona, did the writing fast work? I think that our lives are indeed roller coasters, and amazingly, I think that's the way we would want it. Occasionally I want to stay on the ground for a while, but those lows make the highs so enjoyable! Best wishes in all the going back! I started today, talking and meeting and talking-and I'm tired! But it is a good tired, & I'm enjoying reading slices like yours! Thanks!
