Today I join my fellow bloggers in "serving up a slice"
to the March Slice of Life Story Challenge community.
Thanks to Stacey, Betsy, Beth, Kathleen, Deb, Melanie, and Lanny
for hosting this meeting place each day in March
and for nurturing our writing lives.
Yesterday morning I hit a sweet slicing spot! I suddenly have more things to write about than I have days left in the month. My 30/31 slice is written, my 31/31 slice is planned, I want to write a "Dear Academy of American Poets post, and then up pops Stacey's naughty children post and I definitely want to write a naughty Grandma and Jack slice. Okay, I'll write the "Dear Academy of American Poets" post for 29/31 and save the naughty Grandma and Jack post for a future Tuesday slice of life.
And then last night, I read Leigh Anne's book spine poem and suddenly I want today's post to be book spine poetry. All right, I'll shift the "Dear Academy of American Poets" to April for National Poetry Month so I can play with books to create some book spine poetry this morning. Past experience with this format tells me to limit myself to a set number of books. So I choose my picture book bin from the public library. And it's time to create!
Here are the three poems I created:
School people,
here comes teacher cat,
the new liBEARian,
the word collector!
Once upon a full moon
the blue umbrella
swimming with sharks,
otter, and odder.
Awake beautiful child!
Once upon a full moon
Malala
traveling the blue road
shaking things up!
I always enjoy these book spine poems and want to try one. I haven't yet. My wife, being a former elementary school librarian, enjoyed your first poem.
ReplyDeleteI haven't ever tried one of these. Maybe it's time. Thanks for the reminder and those quirky poems!
ReplyDeleteI envy you, having more slices left than days to write. I'm feeling a little stuck right now. Every time I see book spine poems, I think I should try them, we definitely have enough books at our house! Maybe I will do some in April, during Poetry Month. These are fun!
ReplyDeleteLove the last one!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how when those writing juices get going, we have plenty? Love the book spine poems as well today!
ReplyDeleteLove your choice and poems. Isn't it great to have more ideas than days for writing? Certainly better than running out of ideas. I am glad you too made book spine poetry.
ReplyDeleteSo fun. I love when you have more to write about than needed.
ReplyDeleteJust having more planned than days is a slice in itself, but then you top it off by spine poetry. A double slice! I love the way titles fit together and create an image in the the reader's mind. Nice job, Ramona!
ReplyDeleteVery creative! I have never tried book spine poetry but would like to. I blog everyday, and have a draft list right on my wordpress page that contains 128 topics right now! Keep on writing every day! Why not? Just because Sunday is April 1st, doesn't mean you have to stop or just post on Tuesdays! Thanks - I'll look forward to reading more! Still having trouble with blogspot blogs and commenting...I will leave comment with google id but this is from a fellow slicer @ The Apples in My Orchard! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! Your collection flows beautifully into a wonderful poem. I too have been thinking of a book spine poem before the end of the month. Looking forward to your wrap-up posts!
ReplyDeleteMalala sure is shaking things up! I was just listening to reports on NPR of her well-kept secret of a visit to Pakastan today, her first visit since she was evacuated. What a story she has to tell. Great spine poem. Aren't they fun?
ReplyDeleteThese are SO fun! I think that you could easily put these all into one fantastic poem!
ReplyDeleteI do book spine poetry with my creative writing class! It's so much fun! I especially love your last one. Also, I totally understand dealing with that dry spell of ideas and then the dam bursts when there's not enough days left in March!
