Today I join my fellow bloggers in "serving up a slice"
to the March Slice of Life Story Challenge community.
Thanks to Stacey, Betsy, Beth, Kathleen, Deb, Melanie, and Lanny
for hosting this meeting place each day in March
and for nurturing our writing lives.
Last week was a busy week. My twenty month old grandson, Teddy, spent a few days with us while his parents relaxed in Hawaii. They live on the east coast so we treasured this rare time together.
One of Teddy's favorite activities was reorganizing my collection of plastic containers and lids.
I knew that this activity could occupy him for a bit, so it was with a sense of relief that I sat down at the kitchen table with my computer to snatch a few moments to comment on my fellow slicers' writing pieces. All was well . . . until I heard two little words uttered softly, "Uh oh."
It was then that I realized Teddy had wandered out of my line of vision. Maybe he had dropped one of the lids behind the rolling drawer or maybe he had opened one of the other cupboards with breakables. Neither thought prepared me for rounding the corner to see Teddy in the pantry (this boy can open doors by himself!), standing at the top of my three-step ladder with a jar of peanut butter in hand. The reason for the "uh oh?" He had dropped a can of soup. Needless to say, that's the last time this short grandma failed to collapse the ladder (which I use frequently to reach upper shelves in the pantry) during Teddy's visit.
Those two sounds (uh oh) can strike fear in any grandma's heart. Too funny! But really, he is so darn cute!
ReplyDeleteWhen my daughter was little, climbing into the rawer she had emptied gave her just enough extra height to reach a tub of margarine I had foolishly left on the kitchen counter. You can guess the rest of the story. It was very slippery.
ReplyDeletedrawer, of course
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! treasure this as they all grow up too fast.
ReplyDeleteI think Teddy and Ari would become fast friends. I bet the two of them could have a field day in either of our pantries.
ReplyDeleteYour sweet Teddy is adorable. Glad you got some grandson time in!
I love the image you included with your story. They seamlessly illustrated a lovely time playing in the kitchen, sure to be a memory for you to cherish.
ReplyDeleteHeart stopper! Just wait, he'll discover that drawers pulled out are like a ladder. :) Now you have to get all those kid-proof gadgets. Somehow when we are grandmas we seem to have more of that stuff around than when we were raising their moms and dads.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun age! I am still waiting on grandbabies..I do have a 10 year-old foster grandson though. Your story takes me back to when my girls were that age. I remember one day my 2 year-old spent nearly 45 minutes playing with, of all things, rubber bands! She was enthralled by simply putting them on her wrist, then taking them off, and doing it over and over again! Give it a try!! Enjoy your remaining days together.
ReplyDeleteUh oh for sure! How smart he was to figure out how to use the ladder to get something he wanted! What a cutie!!!!
