Spending tomorrow with friends and Harvey Daniels!

Will Rogers once said he never met a man he didn't like.  I'd like to put my own spin on the quote - I've never met a workshop I didn't like.  Workshops provide the unique opportunity of learning from someone who is a master in my field, collaborating with my colleagues, and forcing me out of my comfort zone to consider new ideas.
We were fortunate this past summer to participate in a book group for Harvey Daniels' new book Comprehension and Collaboration:  Inquiry Circles in Action. We enjoyed meeting several times during the summer to discuss our reading, figure out how to implement our new learnings in the fall, and of course enjoy great conversation  and treats.
I was excited to discover that Harvey Daniels would be in the Seattle area in March. Several teachers from our building will be attending the workshop tomorrow. Most of us have tried out some of the ideas in our classrooms.This workshop is a perfect follow-up to our summer book group.  What a fantastic opportunity to continue our learning together!

A golden oldie of musical theater!

 From the moment the curtain went up and the overture began, I suppressed the desire to sing along with the actors.  It was one of the golden oldies of musical theater and although I’ve seen it many times, I couldn’t resist purchasing tickets for a delightful evening with  my husband, daughter, and son-in-law .  Nearing the end of the play, my daughter nudged me and said, “ There’s your song, Mom.” 

Was it “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific?

Was it “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music?

Was it “Getting to Know You” from the King and I?

Nope, it was “Oklahoma”!  

And while this Oklahoma gal has now lived away from my home state for almost half my life, I'm always ready for a visit (except in the summer).  I love the beautiful Northwest, but home will always be where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.  So  spring break you’ll find me heading for Oklahoma where there’s plenty of heart and plenty of hope.

I spent the first hour after school with a student working on a writing assignment, and then I realized that I had never returned the meds from the field trip to the nurse's office (oops!), and then there were the field trip forms to turn in to the front office.  After that I remembered that I still hadn't posted the homework to the website.  I was trying my best to get out of there and hop on the treadmill before attending a student's play.
Then I realized that I hadn't checked email all day.  One click and a long list of unopened emails assaulted me.  Trying to stay in my "take care of priority business only" mode, I quickly scanned the list and noticed an email address from my classroom website that I didn't recognize.  Might be from a parent.   I better take a quick look.
My colleagues down the hall heard my squeals of delight!  The email was notifying me that I had won a Skype author visit with Katherine Schlick Noe from a blog that I follow.  So the next time you face a long list of unopened emails, remember there might be a hidden delight squirreled away in the middle.  Great way to end my week!
