SOLSC 8/31: Sophomore Musings for a Senior Mind

Today I join my fellow bloggers in "serving up a slice"
to the Slice of Life (SOL) community.
Thanks to Stacey, Betsy, Beth, Kathleen, Deb, Lisa, Melanie, and Lanny
for hosting this meeting place each day in March
and for nurturing our writing lives.

So here's the slice I planned to write on Monday before I became distracted by commenting on slices and switched tracks. This slice has been sloshing around since one night last week when I took a memory stroll in the middle of the night.  You have to do something with your brain when you can't sleep, right?

When I was a sophomore in high school, I had a  big disappointment! In the year that I moved "up" to high school, I had only one class in the high school building!  Four of my high school  classes were in the junior high building.  Our campus was a square city block with the junior high on the lower portion and the high school on the upper portion.  Our town was built on the hills of coal mining, so the high school was indeed up the hill from the junior high.

I remember that I had English and French in the old junior high, but what were the other two classes?   Maybe one was Choir?  I have perfect recall of my one class in the high school building.  It was fourth period Geometry with Mr. George on the fourth floor.  And then I had fifth period Home Economics in the gym building.  I can''t remember my sixth period class (maybe a science course), but it was always a challenge to make the trek back to the junior high building (but at least this trek was downhill) during the scheduled passing period.

So now I've become a bit obsessed with remembering the details of my sophomore year schedule.  A few of my questions were answered when I retrieved this from the closet under the stairs.
My tenth grade report cards are in there along with a few newspaper clippings and other ephemera.  While the high school report cards no longer list the period as did my junior high report cards, Mr. Tackett wrote "Choir (yes I did have Choir that year) Fifth Hour."  Yikes!  If choir was 5th hour, that meant that Home Ec must have been 4th hour and Geometry was 3rd hour.  (So much for my perfect recall!)

I still want to figure out where my four classes in the old junior high were located.  So what to do?  Fortunately, my BFF, Jan, has the best memory ever.  So today, I'll be calling Jan and strolling back forty plus years to find the answers to my middle of the night musings.  Thank goodness I can always rely on her to remember more about my life than I do.

  1. I can only imagine the disappointment of having to go back to the junior high building, but also must ask why you started trying to remember about this? Fun post, but I'm sure I cannot remember my schedule, although I do remember the teachers, the good and the bad!

  2. I have no recollection of either junior high or even high school, Ramona...which is probably a good thing!

  4. Could it have been a history or civics class?
