Inspired by edified listener's post, I decide to do a timed write for nine minutes. I just popped three large chocolate chip cookies into the oven. They need nine minutes to bake, maybe ten. Can I write my post in that time?
One of the tough things about being retired is that I dally too long reading posts and thinking about a topic. I want to carve out some time for my latest read (The Ogress and the Orphan), so what you'll get is my meandering thoughts while those cookies are baking.
I have a Zoom book club this afternoon with two dear friends. We don't meet every month, but it's a delightful way to stay in touch since only one of us still lives in Seattle. She'll be calling in from Alberta this afternoon. We read The Frozen River, a great historical read set in the 1700s. I'm hoping to convince them to read Remarkably Bright Creatures next (which I still haven't read).
We're also reading a Canadian mystery writer* (can't remember her name, but I'll look it up in a bit). We decided that we have to read more than one of her books each year if we hope to complete her books before we die. When you're heading for your seventh decade, you want every book to be worthy of your time.
Speaking of books, my NW book club meets next week for their retreat. I'm not going this year. I'm opting for a summer visit when I can escape the NC heat and humidity. But I do get to recommend three titles and I'm hoping to join in on the voting.. Any great book club suggestions to recommend?
I'm worried about how much I've been able to write.
I ask Siri, "How much time on the timer?"
She replies, "There are no timers on home pod."
I leapt out of my chair and dashed to the oven. Oh good, they're not burnt and probably need a little more time. And right after that, the timer went off.
Siri is a liar!

I would gladly share a cookie and talk books! Two of my favorite things. I have read all of Louise Penny's books and loved almost all of them. Inspector Gamache is one of my favorite characters. I can also highly recommend Remarkably Bright Creatures! I'm glad I found you here today--it made my heart happy. I was just thinking of you yesterday when I finished Tree. Table. Book. by Lois Lowry. I remember reading your recommendation for that book. So good--I'm going to give it to my granddaughter next.

Cookies and books. The perfect combination. I haven’t read Louise Penny, but I know I have one of her books in my TBR pile. I’ll have to move it to the top and check her out. Deb Day
