SOL 20/31 & Poetry Friday: Follow the Recipe

Returning for year nine of writing daily in March with my Slice of Life writer friends! Check out Two Writing Teachers for more slices of life occurring every day in March.

Head over to Michelle Kogan for this week's roundup of poetic goodness.
Thanks, Michelle, for hosting and sharing poems to welcome spring.
I love these words from Michelle's post:"Remember to do something that
brings you happiness each day, and keep on washing those hands."

Welcome to Poetry Friday and a slice about a brand new poetry book I discovered on Saturday at Island Books, our local independent bookstore.
How could I resist? I was immediately bewitched by the cover art,  the subtitle, Poems About Imagination, Celebration & Cake, and the author's name on the wooden spoon, Marilyn Singer!

(I've removed my found poem, "Stirring the Pot," with lines taken from poems in the book pending permission from the publisher.)

When you get your copy of Follow the Recipe, check out four of my favorite poems from the book:
"recipes for enjoying the seasons" - a delightful, sensory walk through seasonal treats
"recipe for science" - a reverso poem, the delightful form that Marilyn excels at and students adore in her books, "Mirror, Mirror" and "Follow, Follow"
"recipe for memories" - whether one is at the fair, the ballpark, the movies or at home, "Food has the power to help you remember." "recipe for courage" - "there's always a chance to be brave," encourages the reader to behave boldly whether one is trying new foods or feeding the hungry

If you don't have an independent bookstore to support, Island Books, a touchstone in our community, ships free to anywhere in the U.S.  Here are wise words for our time from the owner, Laurie Raisys: "Keep calm, wash your hands, and read a book."

  1. Ramona, I am excited about this book since you so loving fashioned a poem as sweet as a savory pot of soup. I do love these lines and find them quite appropriate in this trying time.
    Keep stirring the pot.
