SOL 10/31: Double Digits, Finally!

If you're new to the Slice of Life challenge or even one of the old timers, kudos for making it to the tenth day! I'm always glad to see this day arrive and even though it's not quite a third of the way, it's an important milestone. Believe it or not, before you know it, we'll be in the twenties and then you'll find yourself running out of days before you run out of topics.

Since I just returned from my annual book retreat and I'm in the process of returning books to my bookshelves, I decided to share ten books I might get around to reading someday that are already on my shelves. I think that I only purchased two of these books new, the others I've picked up at our library book sales, used bookstores, or free libraries.

I'll work my way up the stack (with my only hardback first) through the six blue books, the two red ones, the white with a touch of red, and the book on top with purple swirls. Do our bookshelves reveal a color preference? Or is it just that book designers prefer certain colors?

The Illusion of Separateness by Simon Van Booy - my only hardback, purchased when it was highly recommended by a favorite bookseller
Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas - historical fiction set during the Great Depression in the Rocky Mountains
The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch - coming of age tale set in the Puget Sound area
A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner - "A beautiful scarf passed down through the generations, connects two women..."
How to Bake a Perfect Life by Barbara O'Neal - How can I resist a book about baking and mothers and daughters with a main character named Ramona?
A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy - A novel set in Ireland by a favorite author . . . should I save it for next winter?
Pearl of China by Anchee Min - "blends real historical figures with fictional characters and pays worthy homage to Pearl Buck's legacy"
Books: A Memoir by Larry McMurtry - a novelist I admire writing about his endless passion for books
Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson -  "An enchanting book ... The narrative flows like a mournful last walk through a much-loved home."
The Folded Clock: A Diary by Heidi Julavits - "A meditation on time and self, youth and aging, friendship and romance, faith and fate, and art and ambition."

(Comments in quotes were lifted from the book covers or the  reviews listed inside the books.)

I bring you ten books from my bookshelves that are unread for our tenth day of slicing! Believe me, there are others. Can you recommend any of these titles to me? Leave me a comment and help pick my next read (after I finish my current book club read and the book my daughter's friend has written, and the book I'm reading for March Book Madness).  Do you think I might have an obsession here?

  1. I have only read one of these (The Fall of Marigolds- loved it). Thanks for the list. Love that you connected this tenth day with your topic.

  2. I'm going to come back to this list of books. I have to get back to books. I've been too sidetracked by tv. Perhaps my dedication to writing will inspire me to read more.

  4. I have read none of these! I have noticed on my door at school where I post my books read, that blue seems to be the color I have most of. Not sure if that is by my choice or the publisher. Interesting...

  5. I haven't read any of these books, but many of them look good! Currently reading the 3rd book in the Outlander series and also Angie Thomas's new book On the Come Up. (I have broad tastes, those books have nothing in common). Thanks for sharing!

  8. I haven't read any of these. I have always assumed that as soon as I retire I won't have a very tall TBR pile. You've reminded me I will always have a tall TBR pile!
