SOL 9/31: Serious Commitment Issues

If it's March, then it's decision time!

Every year for 2+ decades, our book club has held an annual retreat. Except that it didn't happen in 2020 and it's not happening again in 2021. I'm still hoping for a gathering of the vaccinated sometime this year. But that gathering won't include the choosing of the books because we're doing that this week.

Usually, we are giddy with excitement as we plan what books, what treats, what contribution to the meals, and what needed extras we'll bring. Usually, we decide if we'll be in the morning-car, the mid-afternoon car, or the leaving-after-work car. Usually, we wander trails, explore little towns, visit the local independent bookstore, and cherish the friendships that are cemented by this shared love of books. But I digress! This is a post about decisions, not joy.

Anyone who knows me well can attest to the fact that I am not a decision maker. I often defer to others, even in the simplest of matters. And when I finally make a decision, I find that I'm easily swayed by others or even by my own ongoing vacillations. This inability to decide leads to procrastination. But I've finally decided on the three books I'm submitting to this year's ballot of possibilities for our upcoming year of reading.

Drum roll, please!

Something older (published in 2017)

something new (published in 2020),

and something different (poetry, a genre we don't usually read)!

  1. Love, love, love! First anything by Mary Oliver. Second, a dear friend just recommended Miss Benson's Beetle, and third this is set in a time period I love. ENJOY! I hope you get the opportunity to celebrate your book love safely vaccinated.

  2. The three books seem interesting. After the books are selected, do you all read the same books one after the other? What happens if a person does not like the book ? Hope you all can meet soon.

  3. This is so cool. Any time spent choosing, reading and sharing books is time well spent. I hope that one of your books gets chosen. And I hope that your book club gets together sooner than you think.

  4. I haven't read Miss Benson's Beetle so will look for it, Ramona. I have read & loved the other two. I'm sorry about the 'no meeting' again. My family is floundering about trying to get together this summer. Will we? Can we? Happy reading no matter what!

  6. I love the categories you're using to help choose! I haven't read any of those books but I may have to add them to my list. I've always thought book clubs seemed like such fun, I may need to find one near me!

  7. Three intriguing choices. I’m going to look for them. We can just keep hoping “next time” when it comes to meeting in person..for all kinds of meetings.

  9. The retreat sounds like soooo much fun. I think I need to talk my book club into doing this! And choosing books in advance like you do. I haven't read either your something old or something new books. And I love the idea of reading poetry, I don't think my book club has ever done that.

  10. This does sound like a great retreat and I do hope the real thing comes to pass some time soon. In the meantime your book choices look interesting.

  11. When I said I didn't really enjoy poetry and you insisted that you could change my mind about it, I was hoping my votes could help make that happen this year.

  12. What a wonderful post! YES to decision fatigue and decision avoidance. How I prefer to have others choose! But book club decision making is the most fun. And these look like three fine choices. I hope you'll catch us up on what was chosen!
